Paul Gilbert became the last top guitarist to donate a electric guitar from his personal collection to help raise funds for the medical expenses of pioneer Jason Becker.
The super rare signature Ibanez PGM90HAM will be on sale at the official Jason Becker Reverb store to help pay for Becker’s medical bills. Becker, who has suffered from ALS for three decades, was hospitalized earlier this year with a health problem that made him fear the worst.
Led by DragonForce guitarist Herman Li, the #ShredForBecker fundraising initiative was launched to support Becker and has seen such figures as Metallica, Joe Satriani, Paul Stanley, Guthrie Govan and Nili Brosh donate rare instruments and signed to the cause.
Gilbert’s Ibanez PGM90HAM is very special. Built in 1998 to mark the 90th anniversary of the founding of Hoshino Gakki, the company that owns and manufactures Ibanez guitars – as well as Tama drums – the PGM90HAM was limited to 337 instruments worldwide. Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, then Ibanez endorser John Petrucci, were the only guitarists to receive special anniversary editions of their signature models.
Built for speed, the PGM90HAM has a basswood body with a flamed maple top, white binding and abalone fillets, a bolt-on three-piece Wizard maple / bubinga neck, 24-fret ebony fingerboard and hardtail Gotoh. The decorative abalone is echoed on the inverted headstock and, more recognizable, it has the f-holes painted with Gilbert’s signature on the finish and the 90th anniversary inlay at the 24th fret.
Equipped with a pair of DiMarzio ToneZone humbuckers in the beck and bridge position, as well as a DiMarzio JEM single coil in the middle position, it is well suited for all kinds of high performance acrobatic guitar, and whoever gets it has a collector’s item. special instrument on their hands. You rarely see them in the wild.
Gilbert, who just released his latest solo album, Werewolves Of Portland, and which had a new TC Electronic signature overdrive, signed the control plate cover on the back of the guitar.
